According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigerians affected by disasters will experience less suffering as a result of their collaboration with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Trond Jensen, the head of UN-OCHA in Nigeria, paid Zubaida Umar, the director-general of NEMA, a visit on Tuesday in Abuja.
Ms. Umar praised NEMA and UN-OCHA’s cooperation in strengthening their capacities to respond to disasters.
She made the most of the visit to brainstorm ways to lessen the effects of floods on the environment and people as the rainy season approaches.
She said that the technique involved raising public awareness of the need for preventive steps to lessen the effects of flooding and creating early warning signals based on the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s seasonal climate prediction.
In addition, the NEMA DG declared that an expert meeting will be held to analyze the SCP and create plans for preserving livelihoods and saving lives.
“During NEMA’s upcoming Emergency Coordination Forum meeting, additional flood disaster mitigating activities will be implemented,” the spokesperson stated.
Mr. Jensen, for his part, complimented the DG’s on-shore industry knowledge, pointing out that it would help identify solutions and enhance effectiveness and efficiency.
He was excited about how UN-OCHA and NEMA were becoming closer, stating that “such foresees great things in the future.”
In his remarks, Mr. Jensen emphasized the value of teamwork and creativity in tackling humanitarian issues and climate change.
In addition, he emphasized the necessity of working together to combat rising temperatures and erratic weather patterns, such as floods.
