Oyebanji Pledges Support for Rainstorm Victims in Ekiti

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has pledged support for victims of the rainstorm that destroyed at least 50 houses in several communities on Wednesday evening, leaving many residents homeless.

The affected areas include Ipoti, Ejiyan, Owatedo, and Odo Owa Ekiti, located in the Ijero Local Government Area, where residential buildings, shops, and educational institutions were severely damaged.

On Thursday, Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Mrs. Monisade Afuye, visited the affected communities for an on-the-spot assessment. He expressed deep sympathy for the victims and promised to initiate measures to assist in the swift repair of the damaged buildings.

During the visit, Oyebanji urged landlords to take preventive measures, such as repairing damaged roofs and replacing weak planks, to protect their properties from similar future destruction. He stressed that regular maintenance of old buildings is essential to minimize the impact of rainstorms, which often render many homeless and cause economic hardship.

“I am deeply saddened to see so many people displaced by this disaster. The damage is significant, but we are thankful that no lives were lost,” Oyebanji said. “On behalf of the government, we will ensure that the State Emergency Management Agency visits to assess the damage and provide necessary assistance.”

He also emphasized the importance of tree planting around residential areas to act as windbreakers during storms and urged traditional rulers to promote this practice among their communities.

The Olupoti of Ipoti Ekiti, Oba Oladipupo Kolade, and the Oloja-Owa of Owatedo, Oba Adebayo Adewole, both expressed their sorrow over the destruction. They highlighted the heavy toll the disaster had on women and children, calling for better management of buildings to prevent such crises in the future.

The Olupoti of Ipoti Ekiti praised the governor for his prompt response to the emergency, saying, “We appreciate the governor’s quick action in addressing this disaster. His concern for the welfare of Ekiti people is evident, and we look forward to the government’s assistance to ease the burden on the victims.”

Very interesting topic, regards for putting up. “To have a right to do a thing is not at all the same as to be right in doing it.” by G. K. Chesterton.
