NANS Urges FG to Probe NYSC Over Unpaid N77,000 Allowance

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is urging the Federal Government to investigate the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over the non-payment of the newly approved N77,000 monthly allowance for corps members.

Despite the government’s approval of the increase from N33,000 to N77,000 in July 2024, the NYSC has yet to implement the payment. The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, attributed the delay to the non-release of funds.

NANS is calling for the probe, citing the unfairness of corps members still receiving the old allowance while the Federal Government and many state governments have begun paying their workers the new minimum wage of N70,000.

The association’s National Vice President, Felicia Akinbodunse, emphasized that the failure to pay the new allowance could dampen the morale of corps members, especially given the country’s economic situation.

Akinbodunse, however, submitted that “the leadership of the student body would equally interface with the NYSC to find out why corps members are yet to benefit from the new minimum wage of N77,000, even when staff of the NYSC are receiving the increase in pay from the Federal Government.”
