Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has praised the Federal Government for its efforts in constructing and completing Human Rights Commission offices across the country.

Speaking on Monday at the commissioning of the Kebbi State NHRC office in Birnin Kebbi, Idris, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, commended the Minister of Justice, the NHRC Chairperson, and the Executive Secretary for their collaboration in providing a dedicated office for the commission.

He assured that his administration would support the commission by connecting its office to the national grid and providing an operational vehicle. He also highlighted his recent appointment of a Special Adviser on Human Rights Protection and Enforcement as part of his commitment to advancing human rights in the state.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), emphasized the Federal Government’s non-interference in NHRC’s operations, reaffirming its commitment to upholding human rights in Nigeria. He stated that the commissioning of the Kebbi office strengthens the commission’s operational independence and signals the government’s dedication to protecting citizens’ rights.

NHRC Governing Council Chairperson, Dr. Salamatu Suleiman, highlighted the commission’s ongoing efforts to expand its presence nationwide, noting that nine new offices have been completed since 2019. She urged the National Assembly and the Budget Office to allocate more funds for the construction of the remaining 22 state offices and enhance human rights protections across Nigeria.

Executive Secretary of NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, reiterated the commission’s mission to promote and enforce human rights, calling it both a legal obligation and a moral duty to ensure dignity, freedom, and justice for all Nigerians.
