The management of Kogi State University has announced the indefinite closure of the institution following the tragic deaths of two students. The decision, which was communicated by the university’s Registrar, Olufunke Hudson, comes amid rising concerns over student safety.

The two students, who were reportedly abducted earlier in the month, were found dead on May 25, 2024, sparking outrage and fear within the university community. In response, the institution declared a three-day mourning period, suspending all academic activities.

“The university management is deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. As a precautionary measure, the institution will remain closed indefinitely while we reassess security arrangements,” the statement read.

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the deaths and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Commissioner of Police Bertrand Onuoha assured students and residents that efforts were underway to apprehend those responsible and prevent a recurrence.

Governor Usman Ododo also condemned the killings and vowed to strengthen security measures in educational institutions across the state. “This is a tragic and unacceptable event. We will ensure that justice is served, and our campuses are safe for students,” he stated.

Students have been directed to vacate the campus immediately, while authorities work on enhancing security measures. The university has also set up counseling services to support affected students and staff.

The incident has reignited concerns over student safety in Nigerian universities, with calls for more proactive security interventions to prevent further tragedies.
