Anambra Probes Arrest of Native Doctor Over Money Ritual Allegations

The Anambra State government has launched an investigation into the arrest of prominent native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, also known as ‘Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki,’ after he was detained by security operatives for allegedly promoting money rituals. Nwangwu was arrested by the state security outfit, Agunechemba, on February 9, 2025, sparking significant public interest and legal debates.

The arrest was made in connection with claims that Nwangwu had been involved in activities that promoted money rituals, a practice that has become a growing concern in parts of Nigeria. In response to the incident, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a prominent human rights lawyer, has criticized the arrest, arguing that it violates Nwangwu’s fundamental rights. Ejiofor further raised concerns about the potential abuse of power by state authorities, urging a fair and transparent investigation into the matter.

This is not the first time native doctors have been caught up in legal issues in Anambra State. In November 2024, two individuals, including a native doctor, were arrested for their alleged involvement in kidnapping and armed robbery. These arrests highlight the ongoing tension between traditional practices and modern legal frameworks in Nigeria, particularly concerning activities that may be linked to criminal acts.
