Taye Taiwo Inducted into Olympique Marseille’s Club of Legends

Football enthusiasts have flooded social media with tributes to former Super Eagles star Taye Taiwo, following his prestigious induction into Olympique Marseille’s Club of Legends, as reported by The PUNCH.

The 39-year-old defender, who represented the French side 271 times between 2005 and 2011, contributed 25 goals and 23 assists. He now joins a distinguished list of football greats, including Samir Nasri, Lorik Cana, Mamadou Niang, Fabrizio Ravanelli, and Paulo Cezar, in Marseille’s Hall of Fame.

Announcing the honour, Olympique Marseille shared on their official X (formerly Twitter) English account:

“Naija Represented. Taye Taiwo is in the house tonight as the former Olympien and Super Eagle is inducted into the #OMLegends club.”

Fans expressed their excitement online, with @viralvideoxr writing, “What a fantastic honour for Taye Taiwo! His contributions to Marseille and the Super Eagles will always be remembered. Cheers to the legends!”

During his time at Marseille, Taiwo enjoyed a highly successful spell, securing major silverware such as the Ligue 1 title, French League Cup, and French Super Cup before making a high-profile move to AC Milan in 2011.

Famed for his explosive left foot and attacking instincts from defence, Taiwo became a fan favourite at Stade Vélodrome. His thunderous free-kicks and long-range strikes cemented his legendary status among Marseille supporters.

Since retiring in 2019, Taiwo has remained in France. He is one of only four Nigerians to have ever played for Marseille, alongside Wilson Oruma, Joseph Yobo, and Victor Agali.

On the international stage, Taiwo earned 54 caps for Nigeria between 2004 and 2011, scoring five goals. He was instrumental in the Super Eagles’ defence, establishing himself as one of the country’s finest left-backs.

His induction into Marseille’s Club of Legends not only honours his statistical achievements but also highlights his contribution to the club’s historic 2009/10 Ligue 1 title—Marseille’s first in 18 years.

Following his departure from Marseille, Taiwo played for top clubs like AC Milan and had a brief spell in the English Premier League with Queens Park Rangers, before hanging up his boots in 2019.

French fans also celebrated his induction, with @issylesmoulineaux posting, “Magnifique” with a tearful emoji.

This recognition solidifies Taiwo’s enduring legacy at Marseille, where he remains one of the most influential African players to have ever donned the club’s famous white jersey.
