South Korea’s Impeached President Faces Criminal Charges

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been taken into custody for questioning regarding insurrection charges stemming from his short-lived declaration of martial law in December 2024.

Authorities executed a detention warrant on Wednesday morning, reportedly with the involvement of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials.

Recall that South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol sparked widespread controversy on December 3 by declaring martial law, citing threats from anti-state forces. However, his decision was quickly overturned, and the National Assembly voted to impeach him on December 14 with a decisive 204-85 vote.

The Constitutional Court has 180 days to decide whether to permanently remove Yoon Suk Yeol from office.

Yoon Suk Yeol has been staying at the presidential residence in Seoul after being impeached by the National Assembly and during this time, authorities have attempted to detain him multiple times for questioning regarding the martial law declaration, which led to his impeachment.

President Yoon’s security team hindered an attempt to detain him on January 3, sparking a tense standoff. This has triggered widespread protests by Yoon’s supporters, who have clashed with law enforcement, raising fears of further violence.

On January 15, authorities made a second attempt to detain President Yoon, with police surrounding the presidential compound at dawn and establishing roadblocks to prevent any disruptions or interventions.

After hours of intense negotiations, President Yoon’s lawyers announced that he had agreed to surrender voluntarily, aiming to prevent further escalation. Yoon was taken into custody without a hitch, but tensions remain high, with fears of renewed protests looming large.

Defending his actions, Yoon maintained that declaring martial law was a legitimate move to safeguard the nation.
