Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Secures Second Term as WTO Director-General

Former Nigerian Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been reappointed for a second term as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The announcement was made by the WTO in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.

According to the organization, her second term is set to begin on September 1, 2025. Okonjo-Iweala, renowned as both the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO, was the sole candidate for the position, making her reappointment almost certain.

In a statement following a special meeting of the WTO’s General Council, it was disclosed that all 166 member states unanimously approved the extension of Okonjo-Iweala’s tenure. Her current term, which ends in August 2025, will seamlessly transition into the new mandate.

While the selection process for a new term was initially expected to take several months, the absence of other candidates and strong backing from African countries accelerated the decision. Officially, this swift action aims to ensure adequate preparation for the WTO’s next ministerial conference, scheduled to take place in Cameroon in 2026.

However, some analysts suggest the process was expedited to avoid potential complications from a future U.S. administration. “The goal was to prevent a repeat of the delays caused by Trump’s team, which blocked her appointment four years ago,” noted Keith Rockwell, a senior research fellow at the Hinrich Foundation.

In 2020, the WTO’s consensus-based appointment system allowed former U.S. President Donald Trump to delay Okonjo-Iweala’s confirmation, leaving the leadership position vacant for months. Her tenure officially began only after President Joe Biden assumed office in early 2021.
