President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20). The President landed on Sunday at 11:03 p.m. local time (Monday at 3:03 a.m. Nigerian time) and was received by Ambassador Breno Costa at the Ministry of External Relations of Brazil.

Accompanying President Tinubu are key members of his cabinet, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity, Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi; and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Amb. Mohammed Mohammed.

The summit, which runs from November 18 to November 19, 2024, is being hosted by the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has held the G20 rotating presidency since December 2023. The summit’s theme, “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” will focus on advancing sustainable development across economic, social, and environmental sectors, alongside reforming global governance.

Key topics for discussion will include addressing rising global temperatures, the principles of the digital economy, the ongoing Israel–Hamas conflict, and the growing geopolitical tensions between the United States and China. In addition, the summit will aim to tackle global hunger, poverty, and inequality—priorities set by Brazil’s presidency.

During the summit, President Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders to advance Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms. The Brazilian presidency’s conclusion, including agreements negotiated throughout the year, will also be presented for adoption during the summit.

The event will be attended by leaders from the 19 G20 member countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Notably, representatives of the African Union and the European Union have also been invited to participate. The Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Areias, had earlier conveyed President Lula da Silva’s invitation to Tinubu on August 29, 2024, during the presentation of his Letter of Credence.

This summit represents a critical moment for global cooperation, with a focus on combating pressing issues such as food security and the elimination of extreme poverty by 2030.
