Enyimba Qualify as Rangers Exit Champions League

Nigerian clubs’ standing in African football faces another challenge as only one team from the country has reached the group stage of this season’s CAF inter-club competitions. Nine-time Nigerian champions, Enyimba Football Club of Aba, secured their spot in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup after edging out Etoile de Filante of Burkina Faso in a tense 3-2 penalty shootout in Uyo on Sunday. However, Nigeria Premier Football League titleholders, Enugu Rangers, had a contrasting outcome as they failed to qualify for the CAF Champions League group stage.

Rangers were knocked out by Sagrada Esperança of Angola, losing 3-2 on aggregate in their comeback to continental football after ten years. Despite securing a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg in Uyo, Rangers were unable to maintain their lead, falling 3-1 in the decisive match in Luanda, which ended their campaign early.

Enyimba’s path to the group stage was equally dramatic, requiring penalties to advance despite hosting the second leg at home. Both legs of the encounter ended without any goals, setting up a nerve-racking shootout.

Enyimba netted their first two penalties, while Filante missed their opening shot, but Enyimba’s hopes dimmed briefly as they missed two consecutive attempts. Filante leveled the score at 2-2 but faltered once more, missing their final kick after Enyimba had successfully scored, sealing a 3-2 victory for the Nigerian team.

Enyimba, winners of two CAF Champions League titles, missed out on African football in the last two seasons but returned strongly this year. Meanwhile, Nigeria initially had four representatives in the CAF preliminary rounds, but Federation Cup winners El-Kanemi Warriors and Remo Stars were both eliminated in the first round. To maintain four spots in next year’s CAF competitions, Enyimba must advance to at least the quarterfinals of the Confederation Cup.
