The National Examinations Council has announced the results of the June/July 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination, revealing that 60.55% of candidates achieved five credits or more in English Language and Mathematics.
Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, the Registrar of NECO, shared this information during a press briefing at the NECO headquarters in Minna, Niger State, on Thursday.
He reported that a total of 1,376,423 candidates registered for the examination, which included 706,950 males and 669,473 females.
Wushishi provided additional details about the results: “Out of the total, 1,367,736 candidates sat for the exam, consisting of 702,112 males and 665,624 females.
The number of candidates who obtained five credits, including English and Mathematics, reached 828,284, which equates to 60.55%.
In total, 1,147,597 candidates earned five credits regardless of their performance in English and Mathematics, making up 83.90% of the examinees.”
Addressing the issue of examination malpractice, Wushishi noted a significant decrease compared to the previous year.
He stated, “This year, 8,437 candidates were reported for various forms of malpractice, down from 12,030 in 2023, reflecting a 30.1% reduction.”
However, he indicated that 40 schools were implicated in mass cheating during the exams.
“During the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination, 40 schools were found to have engaged in mass cheating across 17 states. These schools will be called for discussions with the Council, after which appropriate penalties will be determined. One school in Ekiti has been recommended for de-recognition due to mass cheating in two core subjects and one science subject.
Additionally, 21 supervisors were suggested for blacklisting due to inadequate supervision and other misconduct, including aiding and abetting cheating, leaving their posts, extortion, intoxication, and negligence across 12 states.”
He encouraged candidates to check their results online.
“I am pleased to announce that the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination results are now available to the public. Candidates can access their results at www.neco.gov.ng using their examination registration number,” Wushishi concluded.
