United bank for Africa Plc is marking the 40th anniversary of its American branch, which has played a crucial role in strengthening economic and cultural connections between Africa and the United States. The branch, initially set up as a representative office in New York in 1982, received its federal banking license in 1984, transforming into a fully operational branch.

This license allowed UBA America to operate with the same authority as a U.S. national bank, offering a range of financial services such as payment processing, trade finance, loans, and foreign exchange solutions. Over the past forty years, UBA America has established itself as a significant player in the financial sector, serving African banks, multinational corporations, and development organizations.

Oliver Alawuba, UBA’s Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, praised UBA America for its innovative financial solutions and commitment to high corporate governance standards. He remarked, “UBA’s 75-year success story is a reflection of our vision and persistence. The 40-year journey of UBA America signifies not only longevity but also its significant impact on the financial sector and the communities we support.”

Sola Yomi-Ajayi, CEO of UBA America and Group Executive Director for International Banking, celebrated the branch’s milestone by highlighting its resilience and dedication to Africa.

“Marking 40 years of UBA America demonstrates our steadfast commitment to financial inclusion and building robust partnerships while providing access to global financial markets,” Yomi-Ajayi said. He also acknowledged the efforts of the bank’s staff and reaffirmed UBA America’s dedication to excellence, innovation, and regulatory adherence.
