The government of Lagos State has initiated a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of paying the Land Use Charge throughout the state.

Additionally, 500 ad hoc workers were hired to promote awareness.

At the campaign’s launch, Abayomi Oluyomi, the Commissioner of Finance, urged landowners to pay their LUC to assist the government’s development projects.

The campaign started on Lagos Island, Victoria Island, and at the Eti-Osa Local Government/Local Council Development Areas, according to a Monday report from the News Agency of Nigeria.

Oluyomi said, “The campaign is crucial for increasing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue to fund substantial infrastructure projects.”

Additionally, he stated that the LUC taxes were an essential source of funding for the provision of socioeconomic amenities and infrastructure.

Oluyomi pointed out that the budget for 2024 projected spending of over N2.2 trillion, with the state’s budget being funded by almost 70% of the IGR.

“The development of any society relies on its residents adhering to tax payments. I appeal to property owners to support this initiative, come forward, and be counted. This is essential for Nigeria’s development,” he added.

The commissioner stated that a 15% discount had been added as a motivator to support payers.

According to NAN, property owners in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area received reminder bills from the commissioner and the ad hoc staff during the campaign.

Property owners were urged to work with the ad hoc staff by Abdul-Kabir Ogungbo, Special Advisor to the Governor on Taxation and Revenue.

Temitope Hundogan, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, added that the goal of the sensitization was to guarantee LUC payment compliance.
