The Ogun State Administration has verified an outbreak of cholera that led to the demise of a 62-year-old woman and the hospitalization of five others in Ijebu Igbo, within the Ijebu North Local Government Area, approximately four days ago, as per the Health Commissioner, Tomi Coker.
A local informant divulged that the deceased contracted cholera while tending to her ailing child, who is now also hospitalized. Kunle Ashimi, Chairperson of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Ogun State, acknowledged on Thursday the extensive impact of cholera, affecting 30 states, including Ogun.
Ashimi extended sympathies, remarking, “Cholera has been documented in 30 states, including Ogun, with a minimum of 30 deaths nationwide. We offer prayers for the souls of those who have passed.” He also ensured that the NMA remains vigilant, and the administration has introduced a helpline for reporting new instances.
Meanwhile, Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Advisor to the Lagos State Governor on Health, reported an escalation in cholera-related fatalities in Lagos to 21, following an earlier record of 350 suspected incidents and 15 deaths.
