The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has directed its leaders, spokespersons, members and support groups to accord former Vice President Atiku Abubakar the respect due to his former office, despite accusing him of disrespecting President Bola Tinubu.
The council’s position was contained in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Dele Alake, who expressed concern over Atiku’s decision to address the President by his first name, “Bola.”
Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, had come under criticism from the ruling party over his manner of addressing Tinubu.
Alake argued that a former vice president and presidential aspirant should demonstrate a high level of decorum and respect for constituted authority.
He also accused Atiku of allowing political resentment and personal ambition to influence his public conduct since losing the 2023 presidential election.
Despite its criticism of the former vice president, the APC campaign council said it would not adopt what it described as his approach to political engagement.
The council urged party leaders, members and supporters to maintain civility and extend the appropriate courtesies to Atiku in recognition of his former position and status as a presidential candidate.
It further stated that its campaign ahead of the 2027 elections would focus on issues affecting Nigerians rather than personal attacks or disputes.
According to Alake, the campaign would highlight the APC’s programmes, Tinubu’s achievements and the administration’s efforts to move the country from economic reforms to prosperity as the President seeks a second term.
The statement reaffirmed the council’s commitment to presenting the ruling party’s policies and record in government to Nigerians as preparations for the next presidential election intensify.
