The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State may be facing another political setback following reports that former Kano State Deputy Governor and NDC senatorial candidate, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, is preparing to leave the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The reported move has generated attention because Gawuna remains a prominent political figure in Kano and his alleged defection could affect the NDC’s political structure in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to reports, Gawuna’s team recently paid a solidarity visit to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, a development that has fuelled speculation about his possible return to the APC. The claim was made publicly by APC chieftain and former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad on September 2, 2026.

The reported development comes at a time when political parties are intensifying preparations for the 2027 elections, with Kano expected to remain one of the major battlegrounds in the North.

Gawuna previously served as Deputy Governor of Kano State and has remained an influential figure in the state’s political landscape. His reported movement could therefore have implications for the NDC, particularly as the party seeks to consolidate its support ahead of the elections.

The NDC is associated with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is playing a prominent role in the party’s 2027 political arrangements.

However, there has been no official confirmation from Gawuna or the NDC regarding the reported defection at the time of the report. The development therefore remains a political claim pending a formal statement from the former deputy governor or the party.

The reported move also follows previous instances of political realignment in Kano, where prominent politicians have changed parties ahead of major elections.

Political observers are expected to closely monitor the situation as any formal announcement by Gawuna could trigger further reactions within the NDC, APC and other political groups in the state.

Kano’s political importance makes the development particularly significant. The state has a large voting population and has historically played an important role in determining the outcome of national elections.

If confirmed, Gawuna’s return to the APC would represent another notable shift in the political landscape ahead of 2027.

For now, however, the alleged defection has not been officially confirmed, and attention remains on whether Gawuna will publicly announce his next political move.
