Ethiopia Repatriates 2,463 Undocumented Citizens From Saudi Arabia

The Ethiopian government has repatriated 2,463 undocumented Ethiopian nationals from Saudi Arabia after they were reportedly left stranded in difficult and challenging conditions.

The Ministry said the returnees were brought back to Ethiopia last week as part of efforts to assist citizens facing hardship abroad.

According to the ministry, the Ethiopian government, working alongside humanitarian organisations, is providing the returning migrants with support, care and temporary accommodation following their arrival.

The initiatives are also aimed at helping the returnees reintegrate into society, rehabilitate from the difficulties they experienced and reunite with their families.

Human Trafficking Remains a Major Concern

The repatriation comes despite ongoing government campaigns warning Ethiopians about the dangers associated with irregular migration and human trafficking.

Thousands of Ethiopians are reportedly trafficked every year to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, where many seek employment and better economic opportunities.

A significant number of the migrants work in the informal economy, leaving them particularly vulnerable to exploitation and other forms of abuse.

Some migrants also face imprisonment, poor living conditions and other hardships when they are unable to regularise their status or secure adequate employment.

Dangerous Journey Through Yemen

For some Ethiopians attempting to reach the Gulf, the journey itself can be extremely dangerous.

Migrants travelling through the Red Sea and war-torn Yemen face serious risks, including exposure to conflict, exploitation and life-threatening conditions.

Despite the dangers, economic pressures continue to push many people to attempt irregular migration in search of jobs and improved living conditions.

The Ethiopian government has continued to urge citizens to avoid dangerous migration routes and to seek safe and legal opportunities for employment abroad.

The latest repatriation highlights the continuing challenges facing Ethiopian migrants in the Gulf and the wider difficulties associated with human trafficking and irregular migration.
