2027 Elections: Akpabio Vows National Assembly Will Remain Focused

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has assured Nigerians that political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections will not disrupt legislative activities at the National Assembly.

Akpabio gave the assurance while speaking with journalists at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The Senate President had earlier convened a meeting of All Progressives Congress (APC) critical stakeholders in Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno received unanimous endorsements for their respective bids to return to office in 2027.

According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, and made available to journalists, Akpabio said electioneering activities and legislative responsibilities were separate engagements that could be effectively managed without one interfering with the other.

He stressed that lawmakers were elected for four-year terms and were constitutionally obligated to discharge their responsibilities throughout their tenure.

“We are elected for four years and we are going to work for four years. Anybody that is walking on the tiny rope must be able to do the balancing act,” he said.

Akpabio acknowledged that political campaigns would commence soon but explained that lawmakers could schedule campaign activities around their legislative duties.

“We are politicians and campaigns would start very soon. Campaigns can be fixed in the afternoons or evenings while we do our work in the mornings. It is not a problem at all.

“It is not everybody that will go for campaign at the same time because we belong to different political parties,” he said.

The Senate President assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would remain focused on its primary responsibility of lawmaking and addressing the needs of citizens.

“Nothing will affect legislation. We will continue to make laws to take care of the needs of the people. It has never affected the work of the parliament,” he stressed.

Akpabio’s comments come amid heightened political activities and preparations across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
