Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure a second term in the 2027 presidential election.
Akpabio made the statement while receiving members of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, TETFund and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund), led by Senator Mohammed Dandutse, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The Senate President said Nigerians would assess the performance of the Tinubu administration when they go to the polls in 2027 and would ultimately choose what he described as the better-performing option.
He argued that the administration inherited a difficult economic situation when it assumed office in 2023. According to Akpabio, 27 states were unable to meet their salary and pension obligations at the time, but he claimed the situation had improved following reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration.
Akpabio said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would use the 2027 campaign to present what it considers the achievements of the Tinubu government to Nigerians.
He listed the economy, agriculture, security, education and fiscal policy among the areas where he said the administration had recorded progress.
The Senate President also criticised opposition politicians for failing, in his view, to acknowledge the government’s achievements because of their political positions.
He expressed confidence that the APC would have sufficient achievements to present to voters during the election campaign.
Akpabio further defended the performance of the 10th National Assembly, saying the Senate had made significant progress through legislation and its collaboration with the executive arm of government.
He pledged that the National Assembly would continue working with the executive to advance policies and programmes aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.
The Senate President’s prediction comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political parties and politicians increasingly positioning themselves for the contest.
President Tinubu is seeking re-election, while opposition parties are also working to strengthen their structures and present alternative candidates and policies to the electorate.
Akpabio has previously expressed confidence in Tinubu’s re-election prospects and urged supporters of the president to intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the election.
The Senate President’s latest remarks are therefore part of the growing political debate over the performance of the Tinubu administration and the issues likely to influence voters in 2027.
As the election approaches, the ruling party is expected to focus its campaign on its record in office, while opposition parties are likely to challenge the government’s claims and highlight areas where they believe the administration has fallen short.
The 2027 presidential election is expected to be closely contested, with economic conditions, security, governance and social welfare likely to remain major issues in the campaign.
