Outrage as Kuje Council Chairman Threatens Eviction of Non-APC Supporters

The chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, has come under criticism following remarks in which he reportedly threatened to evict residents who do not support or vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The comments, reportedly made while addressing an audience in a video circulating on social media, have sparked reactions from human rights activists and members of the public.

Shekwolo was quoted as saying that residents in his area council must either support the APC or leave the area council.

The remarks have been condemned as a threat to citizens’ freedom of political association and expression. Amnesty International Nigeria called on security agencies to intervene, describing the statement as an attack on fundamental rights.

The organisation argued that residents should not have their right to live in a community tied to their political affiliation or voting preference.

Amnesty International also urged the police and other relevant authorities to prevent any attempt to intimidate or use violence against residents because of their political choices.

The controversy comes amid increased political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, when Nigerians will be expected to choose candidates and political parties of their preference.

Political observers have expressed concern that statements perceived as threats against political opponents could heighten tensions and undermine democratic participation.

Under Nigeria’s democratic system, citizens have the right to associate with political parties of their choice and participate in political activities without being forced to support a particular party.

The controversy has therefore renewed calls for political leaders and public officials to respect citizens’ constitutional rights and avoid statements that could be interpreted as intimidation.

The comments have also generated reactions on social media, with several users condemning the reported remarks and calling for accountability.

As political activities intensify ahead of 2027, civil society groups are expected to continue monitoring statements and actions that could threaten political freedom or encourage intimidation.

The Kuje controversy highlights the importance of allowing citizens to freely support political parties and candidates without fear of losing their homes or facing reprisals.

At the time of reporting, the allegations surrounding the chairman’s remarks remained the subject of public debate, while calls for an official response and appropriate action continued.
