Opposition presidential contenders have warned that Nigerians would not remain silent if the 2027 general election fails to meet acceptable standards of fairness and credibility.
The remarks were made by political figures including Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi and Omoyele Sowore during discussions around the forthcoming presidential election.
The politicians stressed the importance of a transparent electoral process and called on relevant institutions to ensure that the votes of Nigerians are properly protected.
Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has repeatedly emphasised the need for credible elections and stronger democratic institutions. His campaign has focused on improving governance, accountability and the country’s economic situation.
Amaechi, who is the running mate to African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has also been critical of the political process and called for an election in which Nigerians can freely choose their leaders.
Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, has similarly maintained that the 2027 election should provide voters with a genuine opportunity to determine the country’s leadership.
The comments come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already published the particulars of presidential candidates and their running mates, paving the way for the campaign season.
The opposition figures have stressed that political competition should be based on ideas, policies and the ability of candidates to address Nigeria’s challenges.
They also urged Nigerians to remain involved in the democratic process and to pay attention to developments surrounding the election.
The issue of electoral credibility remains a major subject in Nigeria’s political discourse, with political parties and civil society groups calling for measures that will strengthen public confidence in the electoral system.
Sowore has previously stated that he intends to contest the 2027 presidential election with the objective of winning, while presenting what he describes as an alternative political direction for Nigeria.
The opposition politicians’ latest comments are expected to increase political debate as the election draws closer.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is seeking another term, while opposition candidates including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Sowore are preparing to challenge the ruling party.
With the major political camps now organising their campaign structures, issues such as economic reform, security, unemployment, governance and electoral integrity are expected to dominate public discussions.
The politicians have therefore called on electoral authorities, security agencies, political parties and voters to contribute to a peaceful and credible election.
The 2027 presidential contest is expected to be highly competitive, with several political parties already mobilising supporters across the country.
As campaigning progresses, Nigerians will have the opportunity to assess the policies and programmes presented by the various candidates before making their choices at the polls.
