EFCC, ICPC Probe ₦12bn NFF Fund Meant for Players’ Wages, Bonuses

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are investigating the utilisation of a ₦12 billion Federal Government intervention fund released to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for players’ wages, allowances and bonuses.

The development emerged after the NFF responded to a Freedom of Information request seeking financial records and utilisation logs relating to the funds.

In a letter dated August 18, 2026, and signed on behalf of the NFF General Secretary, the football federation said it could not provide the requested documents because the matter was already under investigation by the EFCC and ICPC.

The NFF stated that documents relating to the ₦12 billion fund were currently with the two anti-corruption agencies as part of their investigations. However, the federation did not disclose the specific transactions or activities being examined by the agencies.

The investigation has renewed attention on the management of public funds allocated to Nigeria’s national football teams.

The ₦12 billion intervention was approved by the Federal Government to address outstanding financial obligations involving national teams, including players’ allowances and bonuses as well as salaries owed to coaches.

The funds were expected to help clear accumulated financial obligations and improve the welfare of players and officials representing Nigeria in international competitions.

However, questions have now emerged over how the money was utilised and whether the funds were applied strictly for the purposes for which they were released.

The NFF has not publicly disclosed details of the transactions currently being examined by the EFCC and ICPC. It is also not yet clear whether any individual has been formally accused of wrongdoing in connection with the fund.

Reports indicate that the investigation comes amid broader concerns over the financial management of Nigerian football and recurring complaints about unpaid wages and bonuses owed to national team players and officials.

The issue of outstanding payments has affected several Nigerian national teams over the years, with players and coaches occasionally raising concerns about delays in receiving their entitlements.

The latest development is therefore expected to attract considerable attention from football stakeholders, particularly as the government continues to provide financial support to national teams.

The probe could also provide an opportunity for the relevant authorities to establish how the intervention funds were managed and determine whether all financial procedures were properly followed.

The anti-corruption agencies are expected to examine the relevant financial records and other documents in their possession as they investigate the matter.

The NFF’s decision not to release the requested records because of the ongoing investigation means that details of the expenditure may become clearer once the agencies conclude their work or release further information.

The development also comes amid wider discussions about the administration of Nigerian football and the need for greater transparency in the management of funds allocated to the sport.

For now, the investigation remains ongoing, and no conclusion of wrongdoing has been established against any particular official or individual.

Further developments are expected as the EFCC and ICPC continue their examination of the ₦12 billion intervention fund.
