Ekiti: APC Governorship Aspirant Remanded Over Alleged Defamation, Cyberbullying

A Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has remanded former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant Abimbola Olajumoke in custody for one month over allegations including defamation and cyberbullying.

The case was instituted by Yemisi Joluwe, Chief Executive Officer of YSJ Agro-Allied Limited, who alleged that statements attributed to Olajumoke were false and had damaged the reputation of the company and affected members of its staff.

According to reports, Olajumoke had earlier been granted bail by the court. However, the bail was later revoked after she failed to appear at a subsequent court sitting. Following the revocation, she was arrested and brought back into custody.

The court subsequently ordered her remand for one month while the legal proceedings continue. The matter has been adjourned for further hearing in September.

Joluwe said she approached the court because of what she described as damaging statements concerning her company. She maintained that while YSJ Agro-Allied Limited welcomes legitimate criticism and public scrutiny, it would take legal steps against statements it considers false or malicious.

She further stated that the company remained focused on its operations in agriculture, food production and youth empowerment in Ekiti State despite the ongoing legal dispute.

The case also touches on separate allegations concerning the kidnapping and death of a staff member. Joluwe said the matter is being investigated by relevant security agencies and that the safety of the company’s workers remains a priority.

The development has attracted attention because Olajumoke previously participated in the political process as an APC governorship aspirant in Ekiti State.

Her remand comes as political activities continue across the country, with politicians and political aspirants increasingly facing public scrutiny over statements made both offline and on social media.

The allegations against Olajumoke remain subject to judicial determination, and the court’s decision to remand her does not amount to a conviction.

The matter is expected to return to court in September, when further proceedings will determine the next stage of the case.

The case highlights the growing legal disputes surrounding alleged defamatory statements and online conduct, particularly where public figures and businesses are involved.
