Okorocha Welcomes Court Ruling on Uzodimma’s Imo West Senate Ticket

Former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has welcomed a Federal High Court judgment on the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial ticket for Imo West, describing the decision as an important development in the party’s internal political contest ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Okorocha’s reaction followed a ruling directing the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise him as the party’s candidate for Imo West Senatorial District, rather than incumbent Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The judgment arose from a legal dispute over the party’s senatorial primary and the circumstances surrounding the recognition of its candidate for the forthcoming election.

In a statement issued through his media aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, the former governor expressed satisfaction with the outcome, maintaining that the court had addressed the issues raised in his legal challenge.

He described the decision as a demonstration of the importance of the judiciary in resolving political disagreements and ensuring that disputes over party nominations are determined through established legal procedures.

Okorocha also expressed appreciation to the judiciary for considering the matter, saying the judgment had reinforced his confidence in the legal process.

The former governor further thanked President Bola Tinubu, APC leaders and his supporters in Imo State for their support during the period of the dispute.

He maintained that political parties must respect due process in the conduct of their primaries and in determining candidates for elective offices.

Dispute over APC senatorial primary

The controversy centres on competing claims over the APC primary election for Imo West Senatorial District.

Okorocha challenged the recognition of Uzodimma as the party’s candidate, insisting that the outcome of the primary should be determined in accordance with the applicable rules and procedures.

The disagreement eventually resulted in litigation, with the former governor seeking judicial intervention over the party’s nomination process.

The court’s decision has introduced a fresh development into the APC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections, particularly in Imo West, where the senatorial ticket has become the subject of a high-profile political dispute.

The ruling also places renewed attention on the procedures political parties follow when conducting primary elections and submitting candidates to INEC.

Party primaries remain a significant stage in Nigeria’s electoral process, as they determine which aspirants receive the backing of their political parties to contest general elections.

Disputes over nominations can lead to prolonged legal battles, especially where aspirants question the conduct of primaries or the recognition of particular candidates by party officials and electoral authorities.

Implications for the 2027 elections

The judgment could affect the APC’s preparations for the Imo West senatorial contest, depending on whether the parties involved accept the decision or pursue further legal action.

Although Okorocha has welcomed the ruling, the next steps will depend on the implementation of the court’s orders and any subsequent proceedings that may arise from the dispute.

The APC’s position will also be important in determining how the party manages the disagreement and prepares for the forthcoming election.

For INEC, compliance with valid court orders is a key consideration in the management of candidate nominations, subject to the applicable electoral laws and any further judicial decisions.

The dispute comes as political parties across the country begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. Aspirants are expected to intensify consultations, mobilise supporters and seek party nominations as the electoral process advances.

In Imo State, the outcome of the legal battle is likely to remain a major issue in discussions surrounding the APC’s senatorial representation for Imo West.

The development also underscores the role of the courts in resolving disagreements arising from party primaries, particularly when aspirants challenge the process through which candidates are selected.

As the political situation develops, attention will remain on the APC’s response to the judgment, any possible appeal and the steps taken by the relevant authorities concerning the party’s candidate for Imo West Senatorial District.

The final position will depend on the operative court orders and any further legal proceedings connected to the case.
