The Katsina State Government has commenced the construction of the ₦5.4 billion Mashi Township Road dualisation project, aimed at improving transportation, easing traffic congestion and boosting economic activities in the area.
The project, which involves the construction of a three-kilometre dual carriageway, was officially flagged off as part of the state government’s ongoing infrastructure development programme. The road is expected to improve connectivity and provide better access for residents, traders and commuters within the Mashi community.
Speaking during the commencement of the project, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda urged the contractor, Mothercat Nigeria Limited, to ensure that the work meets approved standards and is completed within the agreed timeline.
The governor described the project as a strategic investment that would support commercial activities, reduce transportation challenges and create a more conducive environment for businesses to grow. He noted that Mashi serves as an important commercial centre, particularly for agricultural products, livestock and other economic activities.
Governor Radda said the development of modern road infrastructure remains a priority of his administration, stressing that quality roads are essential for economic growth, improved mobility and enhanced living standards for citizens.
The Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Sani Magaji, explained that the project includes additional features such as solar-powered streetlights, reinforced drainage systems, pedestrian walkways and other road safety measures designed to meet engineering requirements.
Residents of Mashi have welcomed the commencement of the project, expressing hope that the improved road network will ease movement, attract investment and increase commercial activities in the town.
The road project is part of broader infrastructure efforts by the Katsina State Government to expand and modernise township roads across the state. Earlier approvals covered additional township road projects in areas including Mashi, Bakori and Malumfashi as part of plans to improve urban infrastructure.
Infrastructure experts have noted that road development plays a significant role in promoting economic activities, especially in communities where agriculture and local businesses depend heavily on efficient transportation networks.
The Katsina Government has continued to emphasise the importance of completing development projects according to specifications, with officials highlighting the need for durability, value for money and long-term benefits for residents.
As construction work progresses, stakeholders have called for proper monitoring to ensure that the project is delivered successfully and contributes to the social and economic development of Mashi town and the surrounding communities.
