Donald Duke Warns Nigeria Faces Deeper Crisis Without Urgent Change

Former Cross River State Governor and presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Donald Duke, has warned that Nigeria could face a deeper national crisis if its current political and economic trajectory is not reversed within the next four years.

Speaking during an interview, Duke said the country’s worsening economic hardship, governance challenges, and insecurity require urgent intervention. He explained that these concerns informed his decision to return to frontline politics and seek the presidency, stressing that remaining a spectator was no longer an option.

According to Duke, Nigeria is at a critical point where decisive leadership is needed to prevent the situation from deteriorating further. He argued that unless meaningful reforms are implemented, the country could experience more severe economic and social difficulties over the coming years.

The former governor attributed many of the nation’s problems to years of weak governance, poor economic management, and inadequate leadership. He called for leaders to focus on policies that promote sustainable economic growth, job creation, improved public services, and stronger institutions capable of addressing citizens’ needs.

Duke also emphasized the need for greater collaboration among opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. He said Nigerians deserve a credible alternative capable of offering practical solutions to the country’s challenges and restoring public confidence in governance.

On insecurity, the former governor advocated reforms to Nigeria’s security architecture, including greater decentralisation and stronger community-based security measures. He argued that security is more effective when local communities play an active role in intelligence gathering and crime prevention.

Political observers say Duke’s remarks reflect growing concerns among opposition figures over the country’s economic and security situation as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum. His comments add to the ongoing national debate about governance, economic recovery, and the direction of Nigeria’s democracy.

As political consultations continue across the country, Duke maintained that urgent action is needed to change Nigeria’s current trajectory, expressing optimism that the country can overcome its challenges through responsible leadership, institutional reforms, and policies focused on national development.
