The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed concerns over a recent meeting involving former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and two former governors, insisting the gathering poses no threat to the party’s fortunes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party’s publicity secretary, Femi Nuberu, made the position known while speaking with LEADERSHIP in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Makinde was joined by former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola during a private visit to Obasanjo at his penthouse residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta on Sunday.
Although the purpose of the meeting was not officially disclosed, speculation has linked it to political consultations ahead of the 2027 elections. Sources familiar with the development suggested discussions may have touched on the presidential race as well as the Ogun State governorship contest, in which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the last election, Ladi Adebutu, is widely expected to feature again.
Attempts to obtain comments from Obasanjo’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, were unsuccessful, as repeated calls to his phone went unanswered.
Reacting to the development, Nuberu urged APC members and supporters not to read political meanings into the visit, stressing that private meetings among political figures do not determine election outcomes.
According to him, the party remains focused on consolidating its achievements and preparing for the next electoral cycle rather than being distracted by consultations among opposition figures.
He maintained that the APC is confident of retaining power in Ogun State and performing strongly at the national level, arguing that the electorate—not political meetings—will ultimately decide the outcome of the elections.
Nuberu further stated that the politicians involved in the Abeokuta meeting do not constitute a significant challenge to the APC, pointing to previous elections in which the PDP failed to defeat the ruling party despite controlling the Federal Government and several state governments at the time.
He expressed confidence that the APC has grown stronger over the years and remains the party to beat in the state.
The spokesman also highlighted what he described as the party’s successful and peaceful primary process, saying the consensus arrangement adopted by the APC had strengthened internal unity and reduced the likelihood of post-primary disputes.
He added that the emergence of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola as the party’s governorship candidate, alongside other candidates contesting various elective positions, has further boosted the confidence of party members ahead of the polls.
Nuberu insisted that the APC leadership is not worried by meetings involving opposition figures, maintaining that the party is concentrating on its campaign strategy and governance record.
He expressed optimism that the APC would secure victory in Ogun State and make a strong showing nationwide, saying the party remains united, prepared and determined to win the 2027 general elections despite ongoing political realignments.
