Atiku Seeks Explanation Over ₦108 Billion Cooperative College Budget Allocation

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government’s 2026 budget, describing it as lacking transparency over the reported allocation of ₦108 billion to the Federal Cooperative College, Oji River, Enugu State. He called for a clear explanation of the expenditure, arguing that such a large allocation should be properly justified to the Nigerian public.

In a statement issued by his media office, Atiku questioned the rationale behind the funding, noting that the amount appeared unusually high for a single educational institution. He urged the Federal Government to provide details of the projects covered by the allocation and explain how the funds would be utilised.

The former presidential candidate argued that public confidence in government spending depends on openness and accountability. According to him, Nigerians deserve access to accurate information on budgetary allocations, especially for projects financed with public funds.

Atiku maintained that transparency in budget implementation is essential for promoting good governance and preventing waste. He stressed that all government agencies should be accountable for how public resources are allocated and spent.

The remarks have generated political reactions, with supporters of the ruling administration defending the budget process and insisting that allocations are based on approved government priorities. Some government officials have also maintained that the budget follows established procedures and legislative approval.

Political analysts say debates over budget allocations are common in Nigeria and often intensify as opposition figures scrutinise government spending. They noted that such discussions play an important role in encouraging accountability and public oversight of national finances.

Experts also emphasise that budget figures should be examined alongside official budget documents and implementation plans to provide a complete understanding of the intended projects and expected outcomes.

The 2026 budget contains allocations for infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, agriculture and other key sectors as the Federal Government seeks to address development challenges and stimulate economic growth.

Observers believe continued public engagement and legislative oversight will be important in ensuring that budgeted funds are utilised efficiently and in line with approved objectives. They added that transparency and timely disclosure of project details can help strengthen public trust in government expenditure.

As discussions over the 2026 budget continue, stakeholders have called on all parties to focus on facts and constructive engagement while ensuring that public resources are managed responsibly for the benefit of Nigerians.
