Major political parties have intensified preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi reportedly weighing experienced former governors for key campaign leadership positions ahead of the official commencement of campaigns.
The renewed consultations come as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prepares for the official start of presidential campaigns on August 19, prompting political parties to finalise their campaign structures and appoint directors-general to coordinate nationwide mobilisation and strategy.
Within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has emerged as the leading contender to head Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign organisation, according to party sources. Tambuwal, who previously coordinated Atiku’s 2023 campaign, is said to enjoy strong backing because of his political experience and long-standing relationship with the former vice president.
Reports also indicate that former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi is expected to play a prominent role in Atiku’s campaign structure should the proposed arrangement receive final approval. However, party officials insist consultations are still ongoing and no formal announcement has been made.
In the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), discussions are reportedly centred on Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and former Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura as possible leaders of President Tinubu’s re-election campaign. Party insiders say both politicians are being considered because of their experience, nationwide political networks and influence within the APC.
According to sources familiar with the consultations, Governor Uzodimma is currently viewed as the leading contender for the role, although party leaders are yet to reach a final decision. Analysts believe the eventual choice could also reflect considerations such as regional representation and party unity.
The Labour Party is also putting finishing touches to its campaign structure. Party officials confirmed that a director-general has already been selected but said the identity of the individual would remain confidential until the full campaign organogram is officially unveiled before the campaign period begins.
Political observers say the appointment of campaign directors-general is one of the most strategic decisions political parties make before an election. Those appointed are typically responsible for coordinating campaign activities, mobilising supporters, managing logistics and ensuring effective communication across the country.
Analysts also note that experienced former governors are often preferred for such positions because of their administrative background, grassroots structures and ability to coordinate complex nationwide political campaigns.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, political parties are expected to conclude consultations and formally announce their campaign teams in the coming weeks. Stakeholders have urged all parties to focus on issue-based campaigns and peaceful political engagement while complying with the electoral timetable released by INEC.
The ongoing consultations underscore the increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with major contenders strengthening their organisations as they prepare to present their programmes and policies to Nigerian voters once the official campaign season begins.
