Coalition Urges Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso To Back Single 2027 Presidential Candidate

A coalition of 100 prominent Nigerians under the banner of the G-100 has called on leading opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other political leaders, to put aside personal ambitions and unite behind a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections. The group said a united opposition offers the strongest chance of presenting a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In an open letter titled “The Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition,” the coalition argued that divisions among opposition parties could weaken their electoral prospects and further strengthen the APC ahead of the next presidential election. It urged opposition leaders to place national interest above personal political aspirations and work toward building a common platform.

The G-100 announced plans to convene a National Council of Opposition Leaders within the coming weeks. According to the coalition, the proposed meeting will bring together key political figures, including Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, Amaechi, Makinde, former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, to negotiate a common political strategy and agree on a consensus presidential candidate.

The coalition said the planned gathering would seek a commitment from opposition leaders to support whoever emerges as the consensus candidate, stressing that unity is essential to strengthening democratic competition and offering Nigerians a clear electoral choice. It also stated that discussions would build on the principles contained in the Ibadan Declaration adopted earlier this year.

According to the group, Nigeria’s democracy requires a strong and coordinated opposition capable of providing effective checks and balances. It warned that continued fragmentation among opposition parties could reduce their chances of electoral success and limit political competition in the country.

Political analysts say the renewed push for a consensus candidate reflects ongoing efforts by opposition leaders to avoid splitting votes in the 2027 presidential election. They noted that coalition-building has become a recurring feature of Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly as major parties prepare for highly competitive elections.

Observers, however, believe reaching a consensus may prove challenging because several prominent politicians are widely expected to seek their parties’ presidential nominations. They argue that negotiations, compromise and internal party consultations will play a crucial role in determining whether a unified opposition ticket can emerge before the elections.

The coalition also appealed to political leaders to conduct issue-based campaigns focused on governance, economic recovery, national security and institutional reforms rather than personal attacks. It maintained that Nigerians deserve meaningful political debates centred on policies capable of improving living standards and strengthening democratic institutions.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections continue, political consultations and alliance-building are expected to intensify across the country. Stakeholders say the ability of opposition parties to forge a united front could significantly influence the political landscape in the months leading to the polls.

While none of the opposition leaders named by the coalition had formally responded to the latest appeal at the time of reporting, the call has added fresh momentum to discussions about the possibility of a single opposition presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
