Wike: Fubara Has Learnt His Lesson

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has described Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s reconciliation with his political associates as a natural and commendable step, saying the governor made the right decision by reuniting with the group that supported his emergence as governor.

Wike made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing journalists after inspecting several ongoing infrastructure projects across the Federal Capital Territory.

Reacting to questions on the renewed relationship with Fubara, the minister dismissed claims that the governor’s return should be interpreted as an admission of guilt. He argued that political disagreements are common and should not be treated as personal offences.

According to him, politics is built on dialogue, understanding and changing circumstances, adding that there is nothing unusual about a politician reviewing past decisions and choosing a different path.

He maintained that recognising an error in judgment and taking steps to restore relationships reflects wisdom rather than weakness, stressing that such decisions should be welcomed instead of criticised.

The former Rivers State governor said he was never surprised by the reconciliation because he had long believed Fubara would eventually reconnect with the political structure that played a central role in his election victory.

He stated that the governor’s decision signals a new phase of cooperation among members of the political family, expressing confidence that the renewed unity would create a stronger platform for governance and political stability in Rivers State.

Wike also linked the reconciliation to preparations for the 2027 general election, saying a united political structure would improve efforts to rally support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

He added that Fubara’s public declaration of peace confirmed his willingness to work alongside his former allies, describing the development as beneficial to both the state and the ruling political family.

Turning to developments in the Federal Capital Territory, Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of work on major road projects, particularly the ISEX Road Corridor and the Apo-Karshi Road.

He revealed that contractors handling the ISEX Road project had assured the administration that construction was progressing according to schedule and that the road should be ready for inauguration before the end of the year.

The minister explained that the project, awarded more than a decade ago, had experienced repeated delays under previous administrations, preventing its timely completion.

He disclosed that work on about six kilometres of the road, including major interchanges, is expected to be completed this year, provided funding continues without interruption.

Wike said the ongoing completion of inherited projects demonstrates the Tinubu administration’s commitment to continuity in governance and responsible use of public resources.

He stressed that governments should prioritise finishing projects that improve the lives of citizens instead of abandoning them because they were initiated by previous administrations.

According to the minister, completing long-delayed infrastructure remains a key objective of the FCT Administration, as improved road networks will ease transportation, stimulate economic activities and contribute to the overall development of the nation’s capital.
