Fashola: I Won’t Fault Tinubu Publicly

Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has explained that he deliberately avoids criticising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration on television because he prefers to share his observations and recommendations with the President through private discussions.

Fashola made this known during an interview with TVC News on Wednesday, where he addressed questions about his limited public comments regarding the performance of the current government.

The former governor stated that his decision was based on the direct relationship he has with President Tinubu and the opportunity to communicate his thoughts personally whenever necessary. He revealed that the President recently sought his opinion on areas where the administration could improve ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fashola said he believes such advice is more effective when delivered directly to the President rather than through public platforms. He noted that his goal is to contribute positively to governance by offering honest recommendations instead of engaging in public criticism.

According to him, he has maintained access to the President and has used that opportunity to discuss important issues affecting the country. He added that preserving the private line of communication is more valuable than expressing his views through the media.

The former minister stressed that he does not intend to turn television appearances into avenues for advising the President, as he believes constructive feedback should be handled through appropriate channels.

Fashola dismissed suggestions that the administration may have overlooked major challenges after three years in office. He argued that because he can reach the President directly, there is no need to raise concerns publicly.

He explained that having a direct means of communication allows issues to be discussed and addressed without creating unnecessary public controversy.

The former governor’s position came after the interviewer noted that many expected him to become more outspoken after leaving active government service. However, Fashola maintained that his preference for private counsel has remained consistent.

In the same interview, Fashola ruled out any possibility of seeking the presidency, making it clear that he has no plans to contest for Nigeria’s top political position.

When asked about a possible presidential ambition, he simply rejected the idea and humorously stated that he was already the head of his household.

Fashola also reflected on his long career in public service, describing his experience as a remarkable privilege and expressing hope that his journey would motivate younger Nigerians to contribute to national leadership.

He avoided revisiting past political debates surrounding the 2015 Lagos governorship succession, including speculation over whether he favoured Kadri Hamzat or Olasupo Sasore as his preferred successor.

The former governor confirmed that he remains a member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council but explained that there is a clear difference between offering advice and interfering in government affairs.

He noted that while former public officials and experienced leaders can provide guidance, such contributions must be balanced with respect for the authority of those currently responsible for governance.
