Peter Obi Former Labour Party presidential candidate has said Nigeria’s progress depends on the emergence of leaders who are competent, transparent and committed to the welfare of citizens, insisting that the country has the resources needed to achieve lasting economic growth and national development.
Obi made the remarks on Tuesday in a post shared on his official X account after attending a policy dialogue titled “Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond,” organised by the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, Germany.
According to him, the gathering provided an opportunity for participants to examine Nigeria’s political future beyond the 2027 general election, explore development partnerships and discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between Nigeria and the international community.
The former Anambra State governor said the discussions also focused on governance, foreign relations, economic reforms and practical strategies for promoting sustainable development through stronger bilateral and multilateral partnerships.
Obi noted that he was encouraged by the keen interest shown by policymakers, diplomats and development stakeholders in Nigeria’s future, adding that the country’s prospects remain promising if the right leadership decisions are made.
He maintained that Nigeria is richly endowed with both human capital and natural resources capable of transforming the nation into one of the world’s leading economies. However, he stressed that those resources can only be fully utilised through responsible leadership that places national development above personal or political interests.
According to Obi, Nigeria requires leaders who are accountable, compassionate and committed to investing in people through quality education, accessible healthcare, productive industries and effective institutions. He argued that sustainable progress cannot be achieved without respect for the rule of law and sound governance.
He further emphasised that the country’s future depends on deliberate policies that encourage productivity, economic diversification and responsible management of public resources rather than excessive consumption.
Obi stated that with prudent fiscal management, transparency and strategic investments, Nigeria can significantly reduce poverty, create employment opportunities and improve the living standards of millions of citizens.
He added that national unity and inclusive governance are also essential for building a stable and prosperous society, urging leaders to focus on policies that unite Nigerians and promote equal opportunities for all.
The former presidential candidate expressed confidence that Nigeria can reclaim its position as a respected member of the international community by embracing reforms that encourage economic growth, strengthen democratic institutions and attract greater foreign investment.
He also advocated stronger partnerships with international organisations and development partners, noting that collaboration with the global community would help accelerate innovation, infrastructure development and economic expansion.
Obi explained that the Berlin event attracted a wide range of participants, including government officials, diplomats, business executives, development experts, representatives of international organisations and members of the global media, all of whom exchanged ideas on Nigeria’s future and its role in international affairs.
He described the engagement as a valuable platform for discussing practical solutions to Nigeria’s developmental challenges while showcasing the country’s vast economic potential to global stakeholders.
Obi thanked the European Council on Foreign Relations for inviting him to participate in the forum and commended the organisation for creating an avenue for meaningful dialogue on Nigeria’s democratic and economic future.
He concluded by reaffirming his belief that with visionary leadership, responsible governance and sustained investment in human capital, Nigeria can overcome its current challenges and build a stronger, more prosperous nation that benefits every citizen.
