The presidential candidate of the (SDP), Social Democratic Party Prince Adewole Adebayo, has paid glowing tribute to Nobel Prize-winning playwright and scholar, Professor Wole Soyinka, as he marked his 92nd birthday, describing him as an exceptional statesman whose remarkable life continues to embody courage, integrity and an enduring commitment to truth and justice.

In a congratulatory message released on Tuesday, Adebayo applauded Soyinka’s decades of service to humanity through literature, democratic advocacy and the promotion of fundamental human rights, noting that his achievements have left a lasting impact not only in Nigeria but across Africa and the international community.

The SDP presidential hopeful said his birthday wishes were conveyed on behalf of his family, political associates, supporters and the entire Social Democratic Party.

According to Adebayo, Soyinka’s distinguished career has earned him global respect as a fearless voice who has consistently defended justice, freedom and responsible leadership.

He said the literary icon has spent a lifetime inspiring countless people through his intellectual contributions, principled convictions and readiness to challenge oppression regardless of the circumstances.

Adebayo stated that Soyinka’s influence extends far beyond the pages of his books, adding that his public interventions have continually reminded leaders of the importance of accountability, transparency and ethical governance.

He noted that the Nobel laureate’s commitment to democratic ideals and human dignity has remained unwavering for several decades, making him one of Africa’s most respected moral authorities.

The SDP standard-bearer also prayed for God’s continued blessings upon Soyinka, wishing him sound health, strength and many more years of impactful service to Nigeria, the African continent and the global community.

He expressed optimism that the elder statesman would continue to share his wisdom and experience in advancing justice, peace and national development.

Also celebrating the renowned playwright, the National Publicity Secretary of the SDP, Rufus Aiyenigba, described Soyinka as an enduring symbol of hope whose voice has consistently provided direction during periods of national uncertainty.

Aiyenigba said the Nobel laureate has distinguished himself as a dependable advocate of truth who has never hesitated to confront injustice or speak out whenever the nation’s democratic values were threatened.

According to him, Soyinka’s consistency in defending fairness and constitutional principles has earned him admiration both within Nigeria and internationally.

He added that the celebrated author has remained a source of inspiration for generations of Nigerians through his courage, intellectual depth and unwavering dedication to nation-building.

The party spokesman further noted that Soyinka’s writings, speeches and public engagements have continued to shape conversations around governance, social justice and responsible citizenship.

He stressed that the SDP values its longstanding relationship with the literary giant, especially through the party’s National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, who has maintained a close association with him over the years.

Born on July 13, 1934, Professor Soyinka made history in 1986 when he became the first African recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, an achievement that elevated African literature onto the global stage.

Over the years, he has authored numerous acclaimed plays, novels, essays and poems while earning worldwide recognition for his advocacy of democracy, human rights, freedom of expression and good governance.

Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost intellectuals, Soyinka has consistently lent his voice to national discourse, championing the rule of law, justice, accountability and the protection of democratic institutions throughout his distinguished public life.
