Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has promised to prioritise the welfare of police personnel and their families if elected in the 2027 general election.
Obi made the pledge in a viral video while addressing police officers, where he commended their dedication to national service and assured them that his administration would focus on improving their working conditions and overall well-being.
According to the former Anambra State governor, security personnel deserve better treatment because of the vital role they play in maintaining law and order across the country.
“We don’t want to bring you people out from your office to come where they are spanking you. We want to bring you out to something better because you are doing great work for the country,” Obi said.
He lamented the economic hardship facing many Nigerians, noting that countless families are struggling to meet basic needs, including paying hospital bills.
“Mothers are in hospitals without knowing how to pay their bills. That’s what concerns us,” he stated.
Obi assured the officers that improving their welfare, securing the future of their children, and enhancing the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians would be among the priorities of his administration.
“We are talking about your welfare, the future of your children and the future of everybody,” he said.
The former governor also stressed the importance of equal access to quality education, recalling his childhood experience of attending the same school as the children of his family’s driver.
“My mother’s driver and I attended the same school. That’s the kind of Nigeria we want to build,” he said.
Obi said his vision is to build a nation where every child, regardless of social or economic background, has equal opportunities to succeed.
“We want a better Nigeria where people are happy to live, and especially where the poor can see their children become anything they choose to be,” he added.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to building a more equitable society, maintaining that improved healthcare, quality education, and enhanced welfare for security personnel are essential to achieving sustainable national development.
