2027: Court Orders INEC to Register New Political Party

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register a new political party, the Citizens Democratic Alliance (CDA), and issue it a certificate of registration.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu delivered the ruling on Tuesday, June 23, following a suit filed by Tamunotonye Samuel Solomon Inioribo and two other promoters of the political association.

The plaintiffs challenged INEC’s refusal to register the CDA in December 2025, arguing that the association had fulfilled all constitutional and statutory requirements for registration. They maintained that the party had secured preliminary approval, submitted all required documents, and successfully passed security and background checks on its national executives and offices before its application was rejected.

In his judgment, Justice Egwuatu upheld the plaintiffs’ arguments and directed INEC to register the CDA and issue its certificate without further delay.

The ruling is expected to increase the number of political parties participating in the 2027 general elections.

The CDA describes itself as a progressive political movement committed to advancing democratic reforms, stimulating economic growth, and promoting accountability in governance.

Nigeria currently has 22 registered political parties, all of which have submitted their membership registers to INEC ahead of the 2027 elections.
