Former Labour Party presidential flagbearer Peter Obi has stated that he would not hesitate to give everything, including his life, if circumstances demanded it in service to Nigeria, insisting that true leadership comes with personal sacrifice and commitment to national survival.
Obi made the statement during a recent interview in which he spoke extensively about the country’s worsening security situation, the obligations of public office holders and the danger posed by armed groups operating outside government control.
According to the former Anambra State governor, meaningful leadership cannot exist without courage, responsibility and a readiness to place national interest above individual comfort or protection.
While discussing how Nigeria can effectively confront insecurity, Obi argued that leaders must possess the determination to face difficult realities rather than seek positions of power for prestige alone.
He stressed that people who aspire to govern should understand that leadership demands sacrifice and a willingness to stand firm during periods of crisis.
During the conversation, Obi remarked that anyone determined to serve must also accept the risks that come with such responsibility. He suggested that commitment to national service cannot be separated from readiness to make difficult personal choices.
Asked directly whether he personally would be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the country, Obi answered without hesitation and reaffirmed his dedication to Nigeria.
He explained that even if he were outside the country and conflict broke out, he would return because he believes Nigeria belongs to all its citizens and must be protected.
Obi warned against allowing armed groups or unofficial power structures to weaken government authority, maintaining that preserving the integrity of the state should remain a priority.
He expressed concern over growing instability across parts of the country and argued that immediate attention should be given to protecting lives instead of focusing solely on future political contests.
According to him, restoring peace and strengthening national security should take precedence over electoral calculations and political interests.
The former presidential candidate also maintained that no society can experience lasting growth or meaningful progress when criminal networks operate without restraint or challenge state institutions.
Obi called on authorities at every level to intensify efforts aimed at securing communities and rebuilding public confidence in governance.
Since completing his tenure as governor and later contesting the 2023 presidential election, he has continued to speak publicly on issues relating to governance, economic management, education and national security.
His latest comments have sparked debate among Nigerians online. Supporters described his remarks as evidence of patriotism and commitment to national unity, while critics argued that declarations of sacrifice must be matched with practical solutions and measurable policies.
Obi, however, maintained that leadership requires courage, responsibility and the readiness to defend the country whenever necessary.
