Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), and Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, have applauded President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen the education sector, describing quality learning and citizen collaboration with security agencies as essential instruments for tackling insecurity, banditry and terrorism.
They made the remarks during the inauguration of Kaduna Christian Academy, a new faith-based educational institution presented to the Christian community by associates of the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi.
The project follows a similar initiative in May 2025 when the DSS chief’s associates established an Islamic school in Danbushiya, Chikun Local Government Area, for the Muslim community.
Speaking at the event, Musa described the academy as a powerful non-military strategy for addressing security concerns. According to him, safeguarding the nation goes beyond combat operations, intelligence activities and military hardware. He stressed that ignorance, poverty and hopelessness are among the underlying factors fuelling insecurity and must be confronted through education.
The Defence Minister noted that schools play a crucial role in shaping responsible citizens and reducing vulnerability to extremist ideologies. He praised the DSS for extending its impact beyond traditional security functions by supporting initiatives that promote social development and community growth.
According to Musa, an informed and educated population provides a stronger shield against criminality, radicalisation and instability. He added that the institution would equip young people with knowledge, critical reasoning abilities and ethical values necessary for nation-building.
He encouraged parents to invest in their children’s education, emphasizing that academic opportunities can transform lives regardless of background. Drawing from his personal experience, he said dedication, learning and faith can help individuals attain leadership positions and achieve their aspirations.
The minister also acknowledged the progress recorded in Kaduna State in the areas of security, governance and development. He commended Governor Sani for fostering inclusiveness, peaceful coexistence and community development across the state.
Musa further urged residents of Southern Kaduna to remain united and resist attempts by individuals or groups seeking to create division. He stressed that security agencies require the support of citizens to effectively combat criminal networks, noting that bandits and terrorists often depend on local collaborators for information and logistical assistance.
He called on communities to share useful intelligence with authorities, stressing that public participation remains vital in winning the fight against insecurity. While military interventions remain necessary, he argued that education, community engagement and social empowerment are equally important in building sustainable peace.
Representing Governor Sani, the Kaduna State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, James Kanyip, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities. He described education as a foundation for economic growth, social progress and human development.
Kanyip said the commissioning of the academy represented more than the unveiling of a structure, describing it as a beacon of hope and a significant investment in the future of children and society.
Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the 19 Northern States and the FCT, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, explained that the initiative was inspired by the belief that education remains one of the most effective ways to address poverty, insecurity and social challenges. He said the academy would combine academic excellence with character development, leadership training and moral instruction.
Also speaking, Chief Imam of Sultan Bello Mosque, Prof. Suleiman Adam, commended the DSS Director-General for supporting both Christian and Muslim communities through educational projects, describing the gesture as a positive step towards strengthening interfaith harmony and national unity
