Senator Shehu Buba Umar Dumps APC

Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and defected to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).

Recall that on May 20, the senator withdrew from the APC governorship primary election, citing alleged violations of the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and principles of internal democracy.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Comrade Sabo Mohammed, and made available to journalists in Bauchi on Monday, Senator Umar said his decision to leave the APC was taken on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

According to the statement, the senator attributed his resignation to the absence of internal democracy, lack of fairness, marginalisation of genuine party members, and what he described as the growing disregard for the opinions and aspirations of grassroots supporters within the APC.

Speaking shortly after formally joining the PRP, Senator Umar said the decision followed extensive consultations with political associates, youths, women groups, party stakeholders, and supporters across Bauchi South Senatorial District and the state at large.

He described the PRP as a political platform founded on the principles of justice, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and people-oriented leadership, with a strong commitment to democratic values as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The senator explained that his defection to the PRP was aimed at strengthening democratic governance, protecting the interests of ordinary citizens, and ensuring effective and responsive representation for the people of Bauchi State.

According to him, democracy can only thrive where political parties uphold fairness, equal opportunity, internal democracy, and active participation of members in decision-making processes.

Senator Umar also stressed the need for patriotic leaders to unite in addressing the country’s pressing challenges, including poverty, unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance.

“Our people deserve better governance, better opportunities, and leadership that truly listens to their concerns. Politics should be about service to humanity, justice, development, and improving the living conditions of the masses,” he stated.

He further reaffirmed his commitment to championing policies and programmes that would directly impact the lives of ordinary citizens, particularly in the areas of youth empowerment and job creation, quality education and scholarship opportunities, improved healthcare delivery, agricultural development and food security, economic growth and poverty reduction, infrastructural development, women empowerment, social welfare, security, and community development.

The senator called on his supporters, political allies, and well-wishers to join him in the PRP in what he described as a collective struggle for good governance, social justice, accountability, and sustainable development across Bauchi State.

He assured the people of Bauchi State that his commitment to their unity, progress, and development remains unwavering, promising to continue providing purposeful leadership and effective representation at all levels.
