Labour Party Reschedules 2026 Primaries

The Labour Party (LP) has announced a change in the schedule of its 2026 primary elections, shifting the earlier planned dates for various elective positions.

The party had initially fixed its governorship and State House of Assembly primaries for 27th May 2026, while the presidential and National Assembly primaries were scheduled for 29th May 2026.

However, in a new arrangement, LP said all primaries for the offices of President, Governor, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly will now hold simultaneously on Saturday, 30th May 2026.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the adjustment was made due to the overlap of the earlier dates with significant national events.

He explained that 27th May coincides with the 2026 Eid el-Kabir (Eid al-Adha) celebrations, while 29th May marks the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected public office holders across the country.

According to him, the party considered the importance of both occasions in taking the decision.

“In consideration of the spiritual significance of the Sallah celebration and the national importance of the 29th May anniversary, the Labour Party, as a people-oriented and responsive political party, deemed it appropriate to adjust its schedule to enable members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians generally to observe these important occasions,” the statement read.

The party also expressed regret over any inconvenience the change in dates may cause to aspirants, stakeholders, and members of the public, while appreciating their understanding and cooperation.
