Former Rauf Aregbesola has reacted to growing reports linking him with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and a political coalition allegedly associated with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by his media team, Aregbesola dismissed claims that he had officially dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the ADC, describing the reports as misleading and inaccurate.
According to the former Minister of Interior, political consultations and meetings among leaders should not automatically be interpreted as confirmation of defection or alignment with any political coalition. He urged the public and his supporters to rely only on official statements regarding his political future.
Aregbesola stated that he remains committed to progressive ideals and national development, stressing that his primary concern is the growth and stability of Nigeria. He added that discussions about governance and the country’s future are normal in a democratic environment and should not be misrepresented for political speculation.
The former Osun State governor also noted that recent online publications and social media discussions created a false impression about his political position. He maintained that he has not made any formal declaration concerning leaving the APC or joining another political platform.
The clarification comes amid increasing political consultations and alliance talks among major political figures ahead of the 2027 elections. In recent months, several politicians across party lines have been linked with possible coalition arrangements aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
Political observers believe the speculation surrounding Aregbesola may not be unconnected to his past disagreements with some APC leaders in Osun State. Despite those differences, he has continued to remain influential within political circles, especially in the South-West region.
Analysts also note that early political alignments and strategic meetings have become more frequent as parties and influential figures position themselves ahead of the next election cycle. This has fueled widespread rumours of possible defections and coalition-building efforts across the country.
Although Aregbesola denied officially joining the ADC, his statement has not completely ended political speculation about his future plans. Many supporters and political stakeholders continue to monitor his moves closely, given his influence and political structure in the South-West.
Supporters have expressed mixed reactions following his clarification, with some urging him to remain within the APC, while others believe he could play a significant role in any emerging political alliance ahead of 2027.
As Nigeria gradually moves toward another election season, political consultations, negotiations, and realignments are expected to intensify, with key figures like Aregbesola likely to remain at the center of major political discussions.
