The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State has disqualified more than 20 aspirants seeking tickets for the State House of Assembly ahead of the party’s primary elections.
The development has reportedly generated reactions among party members and supporters across different constituencies, as affected aspirants expressed concerns over the screening outcome. The disqualifications followed the party’s screening exercise conducted in preparation for the forthcoming primaries.
According to party officials, the screening committee reviewed the qualifications, documents, and eligibility status of aspirants before arriving at its decisions. Some aspirants were reportedly disqualified over issues related to documentation, qualification requirements, and other internal party guidelines.
Sources within the party disclosed that the APC leadership insisted the screening process was aimed at ensuring only qualified and credible candidates participate in the primaries. Party stakeholders also maintained that the exercise was conducted in line with established rules and constitutional provisions guiding the selection process.
The affected aspirants, however, are said to be unhappy with the outcome, with some allegedly planning to challenge the decision through the party’s appeal mechanisms. Political observers believe the situation could create tension within certain constituencies if not carefully managed before the primaries.
The APC in Benue has continued preparations for the primary elections as political activities intensify ahead of the next electoral cycle. Party leaders have repeatedly called on members to remain peaceful and united regardless of the outcome of the screening process.
Analysts note that internal party disputes arising from screenings and primaries are common in Nigeria’s political system, especially as competition for legislative tickets becomes more intense. They warn that unresolved grievances could affect party unity and electoral performance if not addressed promptly.
Despite the controversy, APC officials insist the process was transparent and necessary to strengthen the credibility of candidates representing the party in future elections. The leadership also urged aspirants and supporters to respect party decisions and follow due process in resolving complaints.
As the primaries approach, attention is expected to remain focused on how the party manages internal disagreements and reconciles aggrieved members in order to maintain stability within its ranks.
