Datti Baba-Ahmed Dumps Labour Party, Joins PRP

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has announced his resignation from the party and confirmed plans to join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

He made this known on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he explained the reasons behind his decision to leave the party he contested with Peter Obi.

Baba-Ahmed cited internal divisions, a shift away from the party’s original ideals, and what he described as outside interference in opposition politics as key factors behind his exit. He suggested that certain developments within the party had made it difficult for him to remain, adding that the Labour Party no longer reflects the values it once stood for.

He also took aim at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of prioritizing the weakening of opposition parties over tackling critical national issues such as insecurity and economic challenges.

Speaking on the timing of his move, Baba-Ahmed said his resignation would take immediate effect and confirmed the PRP as his new political platform. He described the party as one with a long-standing history and strong ideological roots.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, he revealed plans to work within the PRP to support the emergence of what he called a credible southern candidate, possibly of Christian background.

On his personal political ambitions, Baba-Ahmed dismissed suggestions that he is seeking higher office, pointing instead to his past achievements in public service and the private sector. He noted his early entry into politics and contributions to education and healthcare, questioning the need to pursue positions such as president or vice president.
