2027: Coalition Rallies Nationwide Support for Jonathan’s Return

The Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan 2027 has endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan as the most qualified and experienced leader to address Nigeria’s current challenges, confirming efforts to position him for the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at an international press conference in Abuja, the coalition’s president, Tom Ohikere, said the group is mobilising support both within Nigeria and across the diaspora to facilitate Jonathan’s return to national leadership.

Ohikere described the coalition as a unifying platform bringing together various support groups with the shared goal of restoring stability, rebuilding economic confidence, and promoting responsible governance.

He noted that Nigeria is currently grappling with significant economic and security challenges, including rising inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and currency instability—factors that have increased hardship for citizens and eroded public confidence in governance.

According to him, the situation demands experienced leadership with a deep understanding of governance, adding that Jonathan’s record across multiple levels of public service positions him as a strong contender to lead the country again.

“Jonathan remains one of the few Nigerians with comprehensive governance experience and a proven record of national leadership,” Ohikere said.

The coalition also emphasised its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting credible elections, and upholding the rule of law, stressing that restoring public trust in governance remains a top priority.

It further highlighted the importance of inclusive governance that reflects Nigeria’s diversity, fosters national unity, and reduces political tensions across regions.

Reflecting on Jonathan’s previous tenure, the group stated that his administration demonstrated commitment to democratic values, institutional stability, and economic reforms. It added that the outcome of the 2014 National Conference remains relevant to ongoing discussions on national restructuring.

The coalition also criticised remarks by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar questioning Jonathan’s experience, describing them as inaccurate and inconsistent with his public service record.

Ohikere argued that Jonathan’s progression through key leadership roles—from deputy governor to governor, vice president, and ultimately president—illustrates broad and tested governance experience.

He further noted that Jonathan’s peaceful transfer of power in 2015 remains a landmark moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a testament to his commitment to constitutional order.

The coalition disclosed that consultations with stakeholders and political groups are already underway nationwide, with plans to intensify grassroots mobilisation and advocacy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
