Rivers Politics: Nyesom Wike Rejects Endorsement Rumours, Calls for Unity

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that he has not endorsed any individual for upcoming political contests in Rivers State, emphasising that such decisions are the responsibility of party elders.

Speaking at a joint meeting of stakeholders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, held at his official residence in Life Camp, Abuja, on Monday night, Wike urged caution against premature endorsements. He warned that unchecked personal ambitions could create divisions within the group.

The minister stressed that the group’s political strength is derived from unity, cooperation, and commitment—not financial influence. He also alleged that external forces are attempting to create discord among members due to their effective collaboration.

“If we were not working together, if we were not united, it would be difficult. People are not happy that we are working together, so they must find ways to divide us,” Wike said.

He further expressed disappointment in individuals who, after benefiting from appointments facilitated by the group, have turned to criticise its leadership. Wike described such actions as a sign of poor character and warned that attempts to undermine others through deception would ultimately fail.

“Woe betide anyone who, after being given an appointment, turns around to castigate the same group,” he said, adding that many who once sought his mentorship can no longer face him with confidence.

Addressing speculation about endorsements for local offices, Wike dismissed claims of private backing for any candidate. He maintained that his public and private positions remain consistent and transparent.

“I have not endorsed anyone for either the PDP or APC at the state level, and I will not do so until the elders meet. The only person this group has officially endorsed is President Bola Tinubu,” he stated.

Reaffirming his commitment to openness, Wike added, “What I say at night is exactly what I will say during the day.”

He also commended council chairmen, Rivers elders, and party leaders from both parties for successfully organising the meeting, noting that the absence of complaints about member inclusion reflected its effectiveness.
