The All Progressives Congress (APC) has successfully conducted its North-East zonal congress in Gombe State, where new party leaders emerged through a consensus process aimed at strengthening unity within the region.
The congress brought together key stakeholders, including governors, lawmakers, party executives, and delegates from across the six states in the North-East. The gathering was part of the party’s constitutional process to reorganise its leadership structure at the zonal level ahead of future political activities.
Party leaders at the event emphasised that the adoption of a consensus method helped ensure a smooth and conflict-free exercise. The approach, which allows candidates to emerge through agreement rather than competitive voting, was widely praised for promoting cohesion among members.
Speaking during the congress, prominent APC figures described the exercise as a reflection of the party’s commitment to internal democracy and stability. They noted that the North-East region has consistently demonstrated a culture of peaceful political engagement, making it a model for other zones to follow.
The newly elected zonal executives are expected to coordinate party affairs across the region, strengthen grassroots mobilisation, and ensure effective communication among members. Their role will also include preparing the party for upcoming political contests, particularly the 2027 general elections.
Stakeholders highlighted the strategic importance of the North-East in Nigeria’s political landscape, pointing out that the region continues to play a significant role in shaping national politics. They expressed confidence that the new leadership would consolidate on existing achievements and expand the party’s influence.
In addition, party leaders called on members to remain united and committed to the APC’s goals. They stressed that unity remains a critical factor in achieving electoral success and urged stakeholders to resolve disputes through established internal mechanisms.
The congress also served as an opportunity to commend the leadership of the party at both state and national levels for fostering an environment that encourages dialogue and cooperation. Attendees noted that the peaceful conduct of ward, local government, and state congresses contributed to the success of the zonal exercise.
Observers believe the successful completion of the congress signals growing stability within the APC in the North-East. However, some analysts caution that sustaining this unity will require continuous engagement with party members and a commitment to inclusiveness.
As political activities gradually intensify across the country, the APC appears focused on strengthening its internal structures as part of its broader strategy to maintain dominance. The emergence of new zonal leaders in the North-East is seen as a step toward consolidating the party’s base and improving its chances in future elections.
With the new executives now in place, attention is expected to shift toward policy direction, mobilisation efforts, and preparations for upcoming political milestones that will shape the party’s trajectory in the region.
