Former Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has publicly declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections, commending his leadership style and economic reform policies.
Ambode made this known during a special prayer session held in Lagos to celebrate the president’s 74th birthday. The event was organised by a political group known as The Mandate Movement and attended by several political leaders and stakeholders.
During his remarks, the former governor described Tinubu as a leader with courage and foresight, noting that the administration has taken bold decisions aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s economy. He pointed to key reforms such as the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange system as examples of policies that, although initially challenging, are beginning to stabilise the economy.
Ambode stressed that many of the government’s economic decisions require patience and understanding from citizens, adding that meaningful reforms often come with short-term discomfort before long-term benefits are realised. He argued that the current improvements in economic stability are the result of deliberate planning and strong leadership.
According to him, Tinubu’s approach to governance reflects a clear vision for Nigeria’s future, driven by determination to address longstanding structural challenges. He maintained that such leadership qualities are necessary for achieving sustainable growth and national development.
The former governor also called on Nigerians to support the president’s administration, emphasizing the importance of unity and continuity in governance. He noted that sustaining ongoing reforms would require collective backing from citizens and political stakeholders alike.
Ambode further expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic direction, stating that the country is on a path toward recovery and long-term prosperity if current policies are maintained. He added that consistent leadership would help consolidate the gains already recorded and create more opportunities for economic expansion.
Other political figures at the event also echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the need for continuity in order to fully realise the benefits of ongoing reforms. Observers say such endorsements reflect growing political alignment within certain segments of the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Analysts note that early endorsements and political positioning are becoming more visible as stakeholders begin to prepare for the next election cycle. The 2027 general elections are expected to be highly competitive, with various political actors already signalling their intentions and building alliances.
Despite differing opinions on government policies, Ambode’s endorsement adds to the list of influential figures backing Tinubu’s potential second-term bid. Political watchers believe such support could play a role in shaping public perception and party dynamics in the coming months.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, discussions around economic reforms, governance performance, and leadership direction are expected to remain central to national debate ahead of the elections.
