Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai is currently at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission headquarters in Abuja today, which coincides with his birthday.
He honoured an invitation from the anti-graft agency as part of ongoing inquiries. His arrival drew a large number of supporters and onlookers who gathered around the EFCC premises to show solidarity.
The situation became tense shortly after as security operatives moved to disperse the crowd. Tear gas was released across the area while officers chased people away from the entrance in an effort to clear access to the facility and maintain order. The development caused panic, with many people running in different directions to escape the fumes and avoid confrontation.
Security presence around the EFCC complex was immediately reinforced, with movement restricted and vehicles prevented from stopping close to the gate. Despite the tension outside, activities continued within the premises as officials attended to ongoing matters.
El-Rufai remains inside the EFCC office as of the latest update, while the situation around the headquarters is being closely monitored by security personnel and authorities.
