Obasanjo: Nigeria Needs Long-Term Policies Beyond Electoral Cycles

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called for sustainable policies that transcend election periods to tackle Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges.

Speaking virtually on Tuesday at the Second Bi-Annual Honours Awards and Dinner of the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Lagos chapter, held at Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja, Obasanjo stressed that Nigerian leaders must demonstrate strategic thinking and extended vision when developing policies.

The former president, who received a Special Recognition Award at the event, commended the institute’s alumni for their contributions to national development.

In his address, Obasanjo outlined several principles for effective governance:

He urged leaders to “Remain committed to integrity and principles,” noting that sound policy stems from honesty, courage, and prioritizing national interests over immediate or partisan considerations.

On strategic planning, he stated that “Nigeria’s problems require vision, patience, and the ability to design policies that endure beyond electoral cycles.”

Obasanjo emphasized the importance of nurturing future leaders, advising professionals to invest time in young Nigerians by building their capacity, teaching ethical leadership, and encouraging public service participation.

He also advocated for strengthening institutions rather than individuals, arguing that lasting progress depends on resilient, transparent, and accountable systems.

The former president called on leaders to serve as voices for unity, inclusive development, and peaceful democratic practice, urging them to mediate and build bridges where division exists.

In his closing remarks, Obasanjo expressed hope that the institute would continue producing the wise, courageous, and committed leaders Nigeria needs.
